Technical Support - VI75/VI100/VI225 FAQs

Q. How much RAM can the VI75/VI100/VI225 support?
A. The VI75 can currently be upgraded to 64MB, with 128MB pending availability. The VI100 and VI225 can currently be upgraded to 128MB, with 256MB pending availability. Only factory approved RAM may be installed. Vivid Image will not be responsible for the results of installing non-factory approved RAM. Contact your local dealer, distributor, or Vivid Image for further information.

Q. How does feed orientation work?
A. Feed orientation refers to how your image is oriented to the printer roll. The default feed orientation is "no paper saving", which prints the document as it appears on your screen.

Q. The feed orientation is different when printing from PageMaker®.
A. Yes, Pagemaker® generates its own PostScript® code when printing custom page sizes. Choose the "Transverse" option under the Custom Page Size setup to change the feed orientation.

Q. The job I sent to my VI75/VI100/VI225 will not print, and there are a whole bunch of unknown jobs in my spooler.
A. The job was probably sent via parallel port with binary encoding. Jobs sent via parallel port must be sent with ASCII encoding. Delete the unknown jobs in the spooler, and be sure to send the job with ASCII encoding next time.

Q. My printer feeds paper without printing or prints out a PostScript error on jobs sent via parallel port from Windows.
A. On your Windows desktop, click on the Start menu. Go to "Settings" and then click on "Printers". Find your printer's icon, right-click on it, and then choose "Properties". Go to the Details tab, and click on "Spool Settings". Make sure that the "Disable bi-directional support for this printer" option is selected.

Q. My Graphtec or Novacut® printer feeds paper backwards without printing.
A. The printer controllers were designed to support Graphtec and Novacut® printers which are running the latest version of firmware (1.2). If your Graphtec or Novacut® is not running this version, you will have to upgrade it.

Q. My printer controller does not detect my scanner when using the "Probe for Scanner" function for use with Scan-to-Print.
A.
  1. Is the scanner's SCSI ID set to 3?
  2. Was the scanner turned on before turning on the printer controller?
  3. Did you have the scanner connected through a SCSI cable before turning on the printer controller?
  4. Is the scanner properly terminated?
Q. When using the Scan-to-Print feature, the printed image is cropped.
A. Go to the Setup tab on the VI75/VI100/VI225 front panel. Press the "Scanner" button. If you have the "Original Size" option set to "Auto", this may cause your image to get cropped, especially if your original image has lightly colored edges. Try setting the "Original Size" option to whatever the size of your scanned image is.

Q. The cutting feature on my printer controller went from being enabled to being disabled.
A. You may have pressed the "Defaults" button under the Setup tab on the VI75/VI100/VI225 front panel. This disables the cutting feature. You will have to re-enter the code to enable the cutting feature again.

Q. What is Autoscale View?
A. Set Autoscale View higher for smoother steps in gradation, or lower for faster printing.

Q. My printed image is smaller than the Autoscale Width setting.
A.
  1. On the VI75/VI100/VI225 front panel, make sure the "Autoscale" option is set to "On".
  2. The Autoscale feature scales the leading edge of the image to the Autoscale Width setting, and the other edge proportionally.
  3. In your application, make sure the image fills the entire printable area of the page. The Autoscale feature will scale whitespace as well as your image.
  4. Remember that most printers have a .25 inch margin on each side of the printer roll.
Q. Unable to select the printer controller in the Macintosh® Chooser.
A. Check the following:
  1. The printer controller is turned on.
  2. The printer controller has a network cable connected.
  3. Laserwriter® 8.0-8.3x is installed and selected.
  4. The AppleTalk® Control Panel is set to "Ethernet".
Q. Unable to adjust custom page size under Laserwriter® 8.4.
A. This is a fault with the Apple Laserwriter® driver. We recommend using an earlier version of Laserwriter® 8, preferably 8.3. You can download Laserwriter® 8.3 from the Apple Computer Inc. web site.
